Course Description
This hands-on workshop is designed for supervisors, engineers, leads, and cross-functional team members who want a clear, repeatable method for tackling complex issues. No previous technical problem-solving training is required — this is an accessible, step-by-step course that helps teams build confidence and competence using the 8D approach.
Key Learning Objectives & Highlights:
Participants will explore all eight disciplines of the 8D methodology and learn how to apply each step to real-world manufacturing scenarios. You will learn how to:
- Form and lead an effective cross-functional problem-solving team
- Describe problems clearly using facts, data, and measurable criteria
- Identify and verify true root causes — beyond symptoms
- Select and implement corrective actions that eliminate recurrence
- Use containment strategies to protect customers and operations
- Document your findings in a clear, professional 8D report
About the Instructor
Dr. Lynn E. Reed is a dedicated engineering consultant for the University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services, where he has provided technical assistance to industries across the state since 1996. With over 40 years of industry experience, he specializes in quality, environmental, and energy management systems, as well as risk mitigation. Dr. Reed has worked with over 60 companies to implement ISO standards and has trained hundreds of professionals in management strategies and industrial problem-solving. His professional focus is currently centered on the impact of formal training on defect reduction and cost mitigation for manufacturing.
Prior to his tenure at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Reed spent twenty-one years in engineering and production management within the chemical manufacturing sector, followed by a brief period teaching high school mathematics. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, as well as a Master of Science and a PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Tennessee Space Institute. A Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, he also maintains professional certifications as a lead auditor for both quality and environmental management systems.
