About

Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is the symbolic language used on engineering drawings to define allowable variation in part geometry. When engineers, machinists, and inspectors read prints the same way, quality improves and parts fit the first time. This introductory workshop builds a strong foundation in GD&T.

Course Description

This workshop introduces the purpose and application of GD&T, making the subject matter accessible and immediately useful. Participants will learn how to define datums and establish part reference frames. The course covers the interpretation of feature control frames, including tolerance symbols, material condition modifiers, and datum references, and provides practical experience in applying true position tolerancing.

Participants will explore the fundamental components of GD&T and learn how to apply these concepts to improve organizational performance. You will learn how to:

  • Master GD&T Fundamentals: Explain the history, purpose, and benefits of using this symbolic language.
  • Establish Reference Frames: Define datums and understand how they establish part reference frames.
  • Interpret Technical Requirements: Analyze feature control frames, including tolerance symbols, material condition modifiers, and datum references.
  • Apply Practical Tolerancing: Execute true position tolerancing through hands-on exercises.

About the Instructor

Dr. Lynn E. Reed is a dedicated engineering consultant for the University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services, where he has provided technical assistance to industries across the state since 1996. With over 40 years of industry experience, he specializes in quality, environmental, and energy management systems, as well as risk mitigation. Dr. Reed has worked with over 60 companies to implement ISO standards and has trained hundreds of professionals in management strategies and industrial problem-solving. His professional focus is currently centered on the impact of formal training on defect reduction and cost mitigation for manufacturing.

Prior to his tenure at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Reed spent twenty-one years in engineering and production management within the chemical manufacturing sector, followed by a brief period teaching high school mathematics. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, as well as a Master of Science and a PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Tennessee Space Institute. A Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, he also maintains professional certifications as a lead auditor for both quality and environmental management systems.
